The Barcelona building "La Carboneria" has been nominated for the European AHI Award, which aims to distinguish quality interventions in all aspects of built heritage and contribute to its dissemination.
This emblematic building is located in the Eixample district, renowned for its famous gridded urban plan designed by Ildefons Cerdà and you can find, on our website, flats still available.
A bit of history...
La Carbonería is a very emblematic building in Barcelona. Its refurbishment involved dealing with different policies, sensibilities, history and narratives. Using them with care and intelligence has been as relevant as the attention paid to its material heritage, its structure and spaces.
Built in 1864, the oldest building in Cerdà's Eixample, it had a troubled beginning. Its promoter, Narcis Tarragó, doubted whether the old 'Wall street' would be transformed into the boulevard desired by the City Council, against Cerda's wishes. His paradoxical design reflects this uncertainty, with the façade supporting the largest openings finally hidden from view. The staircase and lift were moved to the far corner of the courtyard, connecting the façade and each individual dwelling by means of aerial walkways, and creating views and a three-dimensional communal space.
